He was v. pleasant and we made a photo opportunity. The encounter then appeared on Chinese TV and the BBC, but also interviews were held with Sky and Beijing BTV. Slowly but surely we are getting the Morgan brand into the market. This is a long and at times tiring journey. In a population of some 1.4bn we have to find 45 who want and can afford to buy a classic British sports car. During the week we gave away 2,000 picture cards. only another 1bn or so to go...and another few British VIP's will certainly help.

It was so successful that he took pre-orders and was able to fund the purchase of the machinery and to start production. This financial independence as sustained Morgan even to today.

In 1936 built the first 4/4 – Four Wheels and 4 seats. One-hour Record travelling at a fraction short of 100 kmh for one hour at Brooklands, a famous racing circuit.

During 1930 Mrs Gwenda Stewart broke the one hour Record at Monthlery at a speed of over 160 kmh. She was later to achieve 188 KM/h. in a single seater Morgan

In 1936 Morgan Four Four to differentiate it from the three-wheeler, indicating four cylinders and four wheels.

In 1962 success was achieved again at the 24 hours endurance race at Le Mans. A Plus Four Super Sports competed and won the 2 litre class.

The Morgan Plus Eight introduced in July 1968. The cars – Key message: Hand built, Classic, Performance

Morgan has been hand building cars for over 100 years. The objective is not to mass produce generic cars but lovingly craft custom cars for people who appreciate a classic driving experience combined with flair and style.

This is what Morgan calls ‘Automotive Theatre.’

We should make a distinction here between ‘hand built’ and ‘ hand assembled.’ Many cars today are hand assembled, with workers bolting machine made parts together. Morgan cars are assembled with hand made parts. In Malvern there are some 190 craftsmen and support staff, many of whom are second generation Morgan employees.

Morgan makes approximately 500 cars per year all to order. As a result these cars are limited in supply and in great demand.

The chassis is steel, with an ash wood frame hand crafted and unique to each car. The wood frame then has a bonded alloy adhered to it, making it light yet strong.

The wings are made of a super formed alloy, which again makes them light and strong, but also allows a more luxurious shape than metal stamping. Super forming is where the steel is injected at high temperature into a mould. This is the same method used for making air craft fuselage.

The leather on the Morgan cars comes from Muirhead in Scotland. The Scottish highlands are famous for their flavourful Whiskey, but also their fine cattle. The hides are tanned and prepared especially for automotive applications.

The Steering wheels here are from a British company called Moto-lita. They are made of Mahogany , Walnut and steel.

In all a customer can choose one of 5,000 paint colours, over 100 leathers and 100’s of other options from steering wheels to carpets.

The range is defined by the engine sizes.

Aero powered by 4.8L BMW engine

Roadster 3.7L Ford

Plus 4 , 2.0L Ford

4/4, 1.6L Ford

3. Future – Sustainability

The Auto Industry made some 60million cars in 2012. The environmental impact of both the volume and the materials used is not sustainable.

In order to ensure that our children have a planet to drive on Morgan believes in some simple principles:

a. Low Weight Simple chassis, minimal bodywork and the use of lightweight materials, notably wood and aluminium.

b. Recyclable materials Morgan include renewables, notably wood and leather. The use of finite fossil hydrocarbon-derived materials – such as plastics – is relatively low at Morgan.

c. Low Emissions Morgan uses industry leading Power trains for example from e.g. BMW new Efficient Dynamics deployment.

The final aspect is one of Durability A long-lived car is therefore better than a more disposable one.

The current situation of mass over-production results in cars being forced into the market and sold via discounts and other incentive schemes, the effects of which are most obvious in terms of the rapid depreciation of new cars over the first three tofive years of their useful lives.

The low volume of Morgan cars produced combined with the long product cycles means that the cars actually appreciate in value over time.

Morgan is proof that low volume niche manufacturers have a strong market position in the car market.

Forward Thinking

Morgan believes that the future lies in staying true to the philosophy of light weight to high power.

LIFECar – lithium powered car

New initiatives e.g. Magnesium chasis to reduce weight.

Conclusion:

I am very proud that we can bring these two Morgan cars today.

The Museum is the perfect place for Morgan to make history in China.

Up at 06:00 with a coughing daughter, quick dress and off to the Beijing south train station. I had to go to Tianjin for the second time this week, this time to resolve the incident of the CIQ officer crashing the Plus 8 for our customer and partner San He Group. The challenge here of course - how to recoup the costs from the Gov agency which is holding in its hand the license which allows us to import 8 cars sitting in Tianjin. Cashflow wise this is a big issue as we have had to order a replacement Plus 8 immediately. I have 4 weeks to resolve this issue.

Our showroom is coming along nicely, with qudos to anySCALE the wonderful architects. I intend to host a birthday party in the space on the 25th January.

Our first tranche of 6 cars will be on sailing from Southampton on Jan 21st to arrive 26th Feb.

Lots of fun with cash flow, bank requirements for remitting funds overseas, over ordering build slots, and the labyrinth of regulations for customs; however it is all looking extremely promising.

We are able to conduct this business until 2032. This should give me sufficient time to recoup the investment this business is taking to launch. Business License The license means that we can proceed to the next steps for the establishment of our import business. We are making chops of the company, and it is estimated to be finished on 22 nd Oct. Then, we will apply for the organization code certificate. After the organization code certificate is issued, we will go on applying for the tax registration certificate which is estimated to be issued on 26th October at the earliest if things go smoothly. With these certificates, we can first open RMB basic account at Bank of China. While applying for RMB basic account, we can apply for State Administration for Foreign Exchange Identity Card at the same time. Then after SAFE IC card is issued we can go on opening the capital account. With this we can take GBP invoices from Morgan Motor Company to SAFE who will review them, and should then approve the conversion of our RMB to GBP. Once we have the certificate, I shall have the pleasure of managing the tax filing. The tax year in China ends on December 31. It is compulsory to file a report and pay advances monthly or quarterly (monthly for individuals). The date for submitting an annual report and arranging payments is up until May 31. There are fines on arrears. Foreign companies in China are obligated to submit an interim report every three months (advance payments should be paid within 15 days of the end of the quarter). It is clear that the Government wants to be with us every step of the way. The corporate tax rate is 25%, with a withholding tax of 10% on dividends. My understanding is that before a company can remit funds overseas, it must demonstrate both its filings and its payment of taxes. The monies which will arrive on the ledger of the Morgan Motor Company will have travelled quite a few steps over their 5071 miles from Beijing. One of my challenges is to get that money there when the cars are actually built so that they are not parked for long in the damp winter weather. While all these are being taken care of, we continue to promote the cars. At the moment they are in Chengdu and will then head to Qingdao for the first ever China Festival of Speed. We are going to sign our next dealer in Qingdao and this 5 day event is a showcase for him with over 80,000 attendees claimed. The Plus 8 and Aero will side alongside the Lotus, Bentley and Lamborghini. I am delighted that we are weaving the Morgan brand into the fabric of the Chinese car fan. Meanwhile our showroom is moving forward, nearly. After some small gift tokens and multiple submissions of the drawings, the designs by our contractor are now lodged with the Fire Department. We signed on the lease in July with a provisional Sept start date. In my diary I have Oct 15 th as a soft launch. After some rather nonsensical to & fro with the i-rena property management office about the height of our signage, 8 sets of A4 drawings with multiple chops have been submitted for the approval of the Fire Department. We intend not to cook our cars nor our customers with naked flames, our sole heating element being a microwave, but still the powers that be will check our designs. Their scrutiny will take 2 weeks and then we shall learn of the ‘amendments’ required. We shall be lucky to start work in Oct, which is sabotaged by the October holidays and then the National Congress. I am now trying to balance out the schedules for cars being built, funds being available to pay for them in the correct currency, import permit being ready so that the cars can enter the country for commercial sale, and a facility to showcase them in. Oscar, our erstwhile man Friday, raised a concern about opening a showroom in the middle of a Beijing winter when we sell convertible cars. At this rate I am confident that we shall be open in time to welcome the Spring. By which time our tax certificate will be issued, our chops hammered by monthly submissions, and even our import license may have been issued. As we have sold 2 Plus 8’s and have a 44 75 thAnniversary and a Roadster due for shipping in November I certainly hope that these are all in order. At least the girls should enjoy Xmas. I ordered Morgan pedal cars for them, one purple and one pink. They will be hand painted with the names ‘Halo’ and ‘Amity.’ At least the kids should have fun riding these in an empty, very well located and elegantly designed showroom. Perhaps a kids racing arcade would be another fun business to start...
